Procrastination is an internal conflict between the rational and emotional parts of the brain.

The Prefrontal Cortex (Rational Brain) is concerned with logical decision-making skills, while The Limbic System (Emotional Brain) deals with the survival mode. The rational brain focuses on the advantages of long-term goals, but on the other hand, the emotional part prioritizes feelings of pleasure-seeking and overturns the slow-paced decision-making process to avoid any discomfort.

The emotional drive to avoid temporary discomfort gradually develops into a long-lasting habit of indolence, and eventually hope turns to failure.

Trauma and Procrastination

There’s a question that lingers in most minds, “Why does the emotional part of the brain override the rational part?”

The answer to this query is related to the concept of little “t” trauma, which encompasses nonthreatening life events such as the death of a significant person, lack of emotional support, harassment, bullying, or demoralisation. Various factors such as anxiety, indecisiveness, self-doubt, depression, perfectionism, and task aversion all stem from past trauma that smoothes the route for survival instincts to dominate the decision-making process.
